What you will explore

Contemporary German literature

The seminar introduces you to recent and contemporary German literature and gives you the opportunity to discover new authors and works.

You will explore literature in its historical and socio-cultural context and discuss questions raised by the texts with participants from different countries.

Topics include:

• contemporary German literature
• literature before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall
• literature of migration
• new authors and publications
• German literature presented at the Leipzig Book Fair
• historical, social and cultural contexts of literary works

Read, discuss and create

Reading is only the beginning. The course gives you many opportunities to engage actively with literature and with other participants.

You will:

• read and discuss selected literary texts
• exchange perspectives with participants from around the world
• discover authors and books recommended by other participants
• write or recite your own creative texts
• take part in a literature café with people from Wittenberg
• work on a creative final project

Through reading, discussion and creative activities, you will also use and develop your German in an authentic context.

Experience literature in Wittenberg

The course takes place in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, a historic city internationally known for Martin Luther, the Protestant Reformation and its UNESCO World Heritage.

Wittenberg provides a unique setting for exploring the relationship between literature, history, culture and contemporary German life.

Alongside the seminar, the programme includes two days of field trips and a range of free-time and cultural activities. International volunteers and student assistants are also available to support participants during their stay.

Who is the course for?

The Current Literature course is designed for people who:

• are 17 years or older
• enjoy reading and discussing literature
• are interested in contemporary German culture and society
• want to discover German-language literature from different perspectives
• have German language skills at B2 level or above

You do not need to study German literature at university. The course is open to all interested German language learners and readers.

This is not a conventional German language course.

The focus is on reading, discussing and experiencing contemporary German literature in German. You will nevertheless have many opportunities to practise and develop your German through conversation, creative activities and intercultural exchange.
